Major in Global Studies at Illinois.

Our majors develop the knowledge, skills, and values to analyze and engage with the rapidly changing world of the 21st century. When you major in Global Studies, you work closely with academic advisers to create an individual plan of study that matches your interest in specific global thematic areas such as environmental sustainability, human rights, global health, governance and conflict, global cultures, wealth and poverty, or knowledge, communication, and information systems. Choosing classes from a variety of disciplines gives you the freedom to challenge yourself academically in areas that interest you and craft a deliberate, cohesive program of study to prepare you for your next step.

Our graduates are found in a wide array of sectors and locations. They pursue careers in business, government and international organizations, the non-profit sector, and in education. They attend law and medical school, attain graduate degrees in the social sciences, business, and public policy. And everywhere they go, they are involved in shaping our globalizing world. Learn more on our website. We look forward to working with you to chart your path.

Gain Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom

What distinguishes Global Studies majors is their cross-cultural understanding and critical global perspectives. They develop advanced language skills and cultural knowledge in a specific world region through on-campus courses, research, and a semester-long study program abroad. Our majors have the opportunity to pursue a capstone project—an honor’s thesis, assisting in faculty research, or an internship—to synthesize and deepen their understanding of a specific global topic. Their interdisciplinary background and research skills allow them to take a leadership role and contribute to shaping outcomes on campus and beyond.

You also have the option to pursue our minor in Global Markets and Society, which builds valuable skills and knowledge applicable for business, non-profit, or public sector careers.  You may also choose one of our certificate programs, International Development Studies or Global Health, which provide specialization in areas that are highly valued by international organizations and business.  Our campus has minors, certificates, and experiences to fit all interests and future goals!
